HISTORICAL SOCIETY

A small group
of civic-minded residents formed the Society in 1962.
Since that time, the organization has played a vital role
in the
preservation and presentation of the community’s
historically rich
heritage. And, with the generosity of the Cavagnaro family,
the Society
found a permanent home in 1974 and created the museum
we enjoy
today in the former 1914 Carnegie library, listed in the
National Register
of Historic Places.
The Society produces numerous,
rotating exhibits on topics of local
interest and in different media in conjunction with
the permanent
exhibit – an overview of our community’s
development from habitation
by the Matinecock Indians to the present. Ever-changing
exhibits
showcase our rich maritime, architectural, and cultural
heritage, offering
us historical perspective and a keener appreciation
of the legacy
we enjoy. We invite visiting school groups and community
organizations
to tour our museum by appointment.
Our Museum Gift Shop is a treasure trove of antiques,
collectibles and
a selection of new books, recordings, and small gift
items.
Members enjoy a 10% discount on antiques and collectibles.
